fade to black

Wearing: Gap Top | JBrand Skinnies | GoJane Booties (similar) | c/o W118 by Walter Baker Tote | c/o Alilang Necklace

I spent the entire week packing up my sandals & summer dresses, & lining my shelves with my [faux] fur vests, endless boot collection, & woven sweater dresses. Even though my summer wardrobe consisted of neon, brights, & color blocking, I am leaning towards more of a muted palette this fall season.

While revisiting my closet, I reunited with these JBrand skinnies that I haven't worn since high school (don't you love that?) & thought they would be paired perfectly with a similar tone of.. dun, dun, dun.. black. To keep the silver & black going, I added this cute Alilang necklace (only $22!) & my trusty W118 Lionel Speed Tote that has been by my side since I received it. Realistically, you can't go wrong with 50 shades of grey.

Happy Friday!

Not sure if you know.. but I am blind, blind as a bat. I have been wearing glasses since I was in 3rd grade, & earned the notable title of "sexy librarian" in college as I donned glasses 24/7. Now that I am.. ahem, a mature adult.. I rarely wear glasses, but have noticed glasses making a cool comeback as people rock them, prescription or not, as an extra accessory to their outfit. Firmoo was nice enough to send me these cute, killer prescription glasses so I could now consider myself a chic dork. These wide black frames paired with bright pink lips, top off a plain outfit of black, white, & stripes - & the white paneling is the perfect amount of unexpected.

Whether you wear prescription glasses or not, Firmoo sells an array of fashionable glasses & sunglasses that are great quality for a cheap price! Lucky you can order a FREE pair of glasses (for first-time buyers only) - you just need to pay the shipping! I hope you had a great weekend!

design by MK

In the fashion industry, it really is all about who you know - networking means everything! I am lucky enough to keep in touch with an old friend from high school, Shawn, who is now living the life in NYC & has one of the coolest jobs (at least to me!) in the planet: a designer for Michael Kors Collection.

Shawn is part of the ready-to-wear team, designing for the woman's woven, fur, & swimwear lines - swoon! Not to mention, he was recruited from previously working at Derek Lam, & before that he designed at Calvin Klein & Cushnie et Ochs. Did I mention he is MY age? Young & killin' it.

A huge thank you to Shawn for letting me pick his brain in the midst of Fashion Week insanity, & for these killer behind the scenes pictures. Read on to hear about his NYFW experience, a day in the life at MK, & what items you need add to your closet for Fall & Spring!

As a designer, where do you get your inspiration?
Inspiration varies every season depending on the mood of the designer & what's going on in culture. Usually the inspiration starts with something familiar, like a decade in fashion, a fashion icon, art or a movie. Then, as a team, we intensely research the subjects of our inspiration & build upon our ideas. With the inspiration as a common focus, we are all able to design our interpretations of the mood, but still have it look cohesive.

What's a typical day in the shoes of a MK designer? If there is one.
A-typical is typical. Usually days are filled with a number of various tasks, from communicating with our factories in Italy, corresponding with local contractors, sketching, design meetings with Michael, fittings & lots of updating.

NYFW has just ended. How did you prepare?
The week leading up to the show was the most fun. All of our samples arrive from Italy, & we spend time figuring out the looks for the show. We work with the stylist to create the story, combining the clothes & accessories. Meanwhile, we have model castings to pick girls that will best compliment the season's mood. It's a creative process, where you can see how all of your hard work has paid off. Once the looks for the show are decided & are in order, it's like.. placing the last few pieces of the 500-piece puzzle.

What was your favorite part of this NYFW show?
The show itself is always an exciting moment. There's a huge sigh of relief & accomplishment when the models walk out for the finale, & Michael steps out to take his bow - it's a rush of emotions.

How does the MK team celebrate after?
We go out to a big lunch with different departments who participated on the collection, watch the show together on a big TV screen, then catch up on sleep!

What's next?
We have already started working on the next collection, even before the show. We are always juggling at least two seasons at once.

What are key pieces, for fall, that we should stock our closets with?
MK is known for his luxurious materials & classic clothes. In the stores now you can find a great selection of texture; full of plaids, tweeds, & chunky knits. It's all about being cozy in the winter, but still looking put together.

What's in for spring?
Bright colors! Optimistic prints like clouds & pools. There's a slight preppy undertone with 1960's detailing.

For some, fashion is much more than a passion, it's a life-style. If it wasn't for creative innovators like Shawn, who know how to dress a woman (& man) beautifully, we'd have no reason to get use of our sneakers as we run to the mall!

lace me up

Wearing: Ark & Co Lace Dress | Dolce Vita Heels | Trouve Clutch | Kate Spade Watch

This past weekend was my college reunion (3 years, gasp!) where I retreated to Portsmouth, NH, with my best friend to reunite with old friends. You can only imagine the panic that set in as I searched for the perfect dress to wear that was both confident & comfortable. I have been beyond busy that I relied on my trusty friend, online shopping, to find a dress. I ordered four, FOUR dresses that arrived at my door-step the day before, & didn't like ONE. I ran to the mall & found this cute crochet number at Lord & Taylor. To compliment my date's black & white ensemble, I paired it black accessories, & kept the hair & make-up as simple as they come.

It was the perfect dress that transitioned from formal to casual, when we hopped from the function hall to the bar. I love the unexpected gold detailing found in the belt, the fact that it hugged & flared at all the right places, & that it was the perfect pop of color as we rush into fall.

I hope you had a great weekend!

street style

The one thing I loved most about Fashion Week was being surrounded by fashion junkies who love fashion as much as I do. I decided to take full advantage of my outgoing personality & corner fashion mis-fit's outside of Lincoln Center for a street style post - capturing killer outfits, from a Florida entrepreneur (picture #3) to, ah!, a photographer from Glamour magazine (picture #6).

It was obvious that some people let their true colors shine, including but not limited to skirts that slightly resemble orange marshmallows, but an all black ensemble never fails. It's obvious fringe detailing, platform heels, & neon accessories are here to stay, at least for now. Even though I was caught up in the FW hype, running from tent to tent & gawking over fashion forward attendees, I secretly wish I had a few extra hours to spare to simply people watch. The beauty of New York Fashion Week is that it attracts an array of people, styles, backgrounds, & personalities, but we all share one thing in common: our love for clothes.

By the way, today is the last day to enter the Alilgang giveaway! Check it out

woah, walter

New York Fashion Week was an absolute whirlwind, which consisted of no sleep, late nights, & the attempt of trying to look pulled together in 90 degree weather. Not only was I completely smitten being at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week tents, but it was a dream come true, which I owe all to my blog & the amazing connections I've made along the way. So, thank you.

My favorite show, by far, was the W118 by Walter Baker Spring '13 collection. I am a huge fan of Walter Baker, each collection, & the entire WB team, whom I have had the pleasure of working with the past few months. The presentation itself was perfected to a tee - the models rocked out to music via bejeweled headphones, while donning bright & playful patterns, accessorized with killer handbags. Every piece was tailored perfectly, and the mix of leather, prints, & lace made each look eccentric. This collection is killer because the pieces go well together, yet can be great additions for your spring wardrobe if bought seperately. I could not stop drooling over this blue ombre leather jacket & am beyond excited to get my hands on it when the collection hits stores (conveniently, at Macy's!).

Be sure to enter my Alilang giveaway to score a fabulous necklace, & check back this week for some quirky NYFW street style!

go, try it

I feel as though this is the quintessential New York City outfit - comfortable clothes, delicate jewelry, & mirrored aviators that allow me stare at sexy males. I've been in New York since Saturday, & have fallen, yet again, over the city & all it has to offer. I have spent the majority of my time in Brooklyn, finally scooping up Catbird rings & visiting the Brooklyn Flea.

The most exciting part about this trip to New York is the obvious, New York Fashion Week! Ah! Yet the most stressful part of this trip is figuring out what to wear (fashionable without trying too hard) to events & fashion shows. The timing couldn't have been any more perfect, since I just started an awesome collaboration with the new iPhone app Go Try It On! It lets me post photos about style on-the-go & get a genuine second opinion from close friends, fellow bloggers, or complete strangers. In other words: it's where friends meet over fashion!

Below is an example of one of my posts, which was also featured by Rebecca Minkoff - look!

summer's end

Wearing: Alice & Olivia Trousers | H&M Tank | Old Navy Belt | Rebecca Minkoff Bag (similar, on sale!) | Kate Spade Watch | Target Heels

Is it really the first day of September? This can't be right. I decided to celebrate summer's end with the brightest outfit I could find, replicating a watermelon (dare I say) & rocking a new brunette do - whatcha think?

Besides harping on the obvious, I wanted to stress my fascination with bargain hunting. See above, this outfit could have easily cost me $500, right? Both this bag & these pants sell for $200+, but I managed to find both half off - talk about a girl on a mission. I've been desperate to add a pair of A + O's high-waisted trousers to my closet for months, after spying Eva Mendes rocking them with a simple tee, & literally stalked the internet until they went on sale. This RM Mini Mac walked up to me in Beacon's Closet in Brooklyn, NY on one of my thrifting adventures, & we became best friends, right then & there.

My point is, everything goes on sale. Take your time searching, online & in stores, hunt eBay like a hawk, scour Threadflip & Poshmark, because you get so much more satisfaction & thrill buying an item you love on major discount.
